5 Ways to Cash-In Playing Daily Fantasy Basketball in the Playoffs

Written by: James R. Harrison (@JamesHarrisonII)

Oftentimes, the end of the NBA season represents a gloomy end to a fun-filled season of fantasy basketball action on DraftKings and FanDuel.  Many teams who are on their way to April, May, and June’s NBA Playoffs use the final two weeks of the season to rest star players and work with their bench in preparation for a run at the NBA Finals.  Resting players can be the biggest buzzkill for a daily fantasy player, especially when you factor in the amount of money that can be lost on any given night.

But this doesn’t have to be the end, there’s light at the end of the tunnel: the NBA Playoffs.  Beginning on April 15, the NBA Playoffs will open the door for experienced and beginner NBA DFS players alike to one more month of quality fantasy basketball action.

Here are five tips to help you cash-in on the postseason on DraftKings and FanDuel.

| 1. Don’t pick the player, pick the opponent

Don’t fill your lineups by selecting players, fill your lineups by carefully scouting and selecting defenses.  Let’s say Golden State plays Portland in the first round, and you know that the Portland Trail Blazers are one of the worst teams in the NBA against power forwards when using DraftKings’ scoring.  It would be advantageous for you to consider playing Draymond Green, as he would theoretically have the best power forward matchup of anybody else in the Playoffs.

While there are many other factors that need to be considered when selecting players for your lineups, looking at matchups is a great place to start.  For more information on selecting defenses effectively, see tip #5.

| 2. Don’t put too much emphasis on statistics from March

Like I mentioned in the introduction to this article, there are many factors that go into making basketball in March terrible.  Because of this, it’s easy to overlook great players who have had slow Marches.  For instance, the Cavaliers, who have had an abysmal March, should not be faded solely for their recent history.  There are times when recency bias in fantasy will make you a lot of money, but this is not one of them.

| 3. Value picks are the key to winning money and robbing beginners

One of the great things about sports is that there’s almost always a Cinderella story, especially in the playoffs.  In the last year alone, we’ve had wonderful stories; the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Chicago Cubs, and even Leister City.  In NBA DFS, we get bench players who turn it on in the playoffs and carry their teams.  We’ve had players like Boris Diaw, Matthew Dellavedova, and Andre Iguodala light it up at unexpected times, and locating that type of player can be the difference between not cashing and taking down a GPP on DraftKings in FanDuel.

To find players like this, you need to be taking note of lineup decisions and changes that teams are making, keeping up to speed on rotation adjustments, and also looking at shootaround notes and injury reports.  To learn more about finding key value players, see tip #5.

| 4. Target value, find the outliers

Targeting value is the most important part to finding success in NBA DFS.  If your players aren’t hitting at least 5.0 value, or five fantasy points for every $1,000 of salary a player is worth (or one point for every $200), you’re going to be hard pressed to find consistent success in playing daily fantasy basketball.  Luckily for you, there are ways to find out how much value a player should be expected to accrue over the course of a given game.

Looking at defense, like mentioned in tip #1, is one of the keys to finding value.  If you can come to the conclusion that a player is in a favorable matchup, and they have been known to score close or more than 5.0 value at their current price, you should place more importance on having that player in your lineup.

It is also imperative to pay attention to fluctuations in price for any given player.  An unusually poor performance in one or two games can cause a significant dip in salary that can be exploited for significant gain, given a positive matchup.  To learn more about how to target value players, see tip #5.
