Daily Fantasy MLB Baseball: Pitching Preview for DraftKings and FanDuel – 8.17.16

Written by: Coleman Bahr – Staff Writer (@ColemanBahr)

We have a full slate of baseball today, with five afternoon games, and ten night games. In this article I am going to preview the top cash, and tournament pitchers, along with a few hitters I will be targeting hitters against. With that being said, let’s get to it!

| Pitchers to Target in Cash Games

Chris Archer – DraftKings: $10,600, FanDuel: $9,400 – Tampa Bay Rays

It does not get much easier than this. Chris Archer faces off against the San Diego Padres, the worst team in the bigs against righties, at home. Archer has been sensational at home, and there is no reason to think that the lowly Padres can stop him tonight. Do not overthink this one, Chris Archer is an easy play in all formats tonight.

J.A. Happ – DraftKings: $10,900, FanDuel: $9,700 – Toronto Blue Jays

Left-handed pitchers against the New York Yankees has been a matchup I have loved to target all season long, and I am going back to the well today. J.A. Happ takes on the Yankees today, and he has been dominating his competition lately. Dating back to his first start of July until today, Happ has a 6-0 record in seven starts, while maintaining a 1.25 earned run average, and a strikeout rate of 33.1%. Happ has struck out at least six, and picked up the win in his last four outings, and I do not see a reason why that success will not continue today.

 | Pitchers to Target in Tournaments

Scott Kazmir – DraftKings: $7,600, FanDuel: $9,000 – Los Angeles Dodgers

In Scott Kazmir’s last start, he stymied the Philadelphia Phillies for two runs over six innings, but was a tough luck loser. Today, he gets the same matchup, and I expect similar results, except if the Dodgers bats can hit home a few more runs he should coast his way towards a win. The Phillies are the worst team in the league against southpaws, they have the lowest weighted runs created plus, and weighted on base average in the league, along with the seventh highest strikeout rate. While Kazmir has seemed to pitch better at home, his advanced stats imply that he is actually better on the road, and he could be in for a big time performance tonight.

David Price – DraftKings: $8,600, FanDuel: $10,100 – Boston Red Sox

David Price has not had the season that Boston fans were expecting, but he is still capable of turning things around as the season comes to a close. Today he has a pretty good matchup in my eyes against the Baltimore Orioles, who have struggled against southpaws this season. Against lefties, the Orioles rank 27th in wRC+, and wOBA, so while their lineup has some sluggers, they have not come through against lefties. Price still has stellar strikeout upside, especially against righties with a strikeout rate of 26.1%, so he surely could rack up some K’s tonight. Price has seen his fair share of struggles in 2016, but I expect a solid performance from him tonight.

| Pitchers to Target Hitters Against

Jonathon Niese – New York Mets

Just this last week, the Arizona Diamondbacks touched up Jonathon Niese for six runs in just one and a third innings. Unfortunately for Niese, he has to play them again tonight. Vegas thinks the Diamondbacks will smash him again as they are implied for 5.1 runs at the moment, and I have to agree with them on this one. The Diamondbacks have elite numbers against southpaws with a wRC+ of 112, wOBA of .348, and the highest isolated power in the league at .203. I am looking at Arizona for my top stack of the night as they have numerous lefty smashers up and down the lineup.

Sean Manaea- Oakland Athletics

While Sean Manaea has been a great pitcher at home, he has had some problems on the road, and he faces a loaded Texas Rangers lineup tonight. Not only are the Rangers implied for 5.3 runs today, but they also have plenty of lefty smashers up and down the lineup. Even if Manaea is chased from this game early, the Oakland bullpen is nothing to fear. For a stack I am looking at the heart of the order as they all have impressive numbers against lefties, and they should have the most RBI and scoring opportunities tonight. Surely, this will be chalky but it should pay dividends in all formats.

That’s all I have for today, thanks for reading! If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @ColemanBahr, good luck tonight!
