We have a tricky 12 game slate tonight, but there is a few spots that I can get behind. In this article I am going to preview the top cash, and tournament pitchers, along with a few hitters I will be targeting hitters against. With that being said, let’s get to it!
| Pitchers to Target in Cash Games
Justin Verlander – DraftKings: $12,900, FanDuel: $10,000 – Detroit Tigers
Justin Verlander is the most expensive option on both sites tonight, and it makes sense, Verlander has been an absolute beast since getting blown up for eight runs against the Cleveland Indians on June 26th . He faces the Seattle Mariners tonight, and he will face mainly lefties, but that should not be a problem as he has a strikeout rate of 29.5%, and a hard contact rate of 22% to lefties this year. He also has been pretty efficient against righties with a batting average against of .219, and a strikeout rate of 24%. He certainly does not have the easiest matchup, but he has had no trouble dominating the MLB’s best in these past two months.
J.A. Happ – DraftKings: $11,700, FanDuel: $9,200 – Toronto Blue Jays
Earlier this season the Tampa Bay Rays rocked J.A. Happ for eight runs in just two innings, but that Rays squad is actually much different than the one taking the field tonight. The Rays have traded away some of their best lefty mashers in Steve Pearce, and Brandon Guyer, so this team does not crush lefties like it used to. In nine starts since June 16 th , Happ has allowed more than three runs just once, and that was at Coors Field, so he definitely has settled into his own recently. Happ has also struck out at least five batters in the last nine games, including two double digit strikeout performances. Happ makes for a great cash game play tonight, and he always seems to be in line for a win with 15 wins already this season.
| Pitchers to Target in Tournaments
Jose Quintana – DraftKings: $10,300, FanDuel: $9,000 – Chicago White Sox
I can definitely give Jose Quintana a go in tournaments against the struggling Kansas City Royals. Over the past two weeks, the Kansas City Royals have drawn a walk only 5.15% of the time, while only hitting .226. As for Quintana, he is one of the best pitchers on this slate with a 2.93 earned run average, while striking 22.3% of the batters he faces. Quintana has already faced the Royals twice this year, and it has panned out well for him as he has struck out 15 while walking zero in 14.1 innings. Quintana makes for an interesting tournament option tonight with solid strikeout upside against the struggling Kansas City Royals.
Anthony DeSclafani – Draft Kings: $9,300, Fan Duel: $8,100 – Cincinnati Reds
Another interesting tournament option is Anthony DeSclafani. DeSclafani faces off against the righty- dominant St. Louis Cardinals, and DeSclafani has crushed righties with a .226 wOBA, .040 ISO, and a strikeout rate of 25.8%. He also gets the pleasure of pitching at home where he sports a 3-0 record, and a 1.93 ERA. Also, the Cardinals have really struggled to score against opposing starting pitchers lately, over the past six games, the starting pitchers facing the Cardinals have piled up a 2.10 ERA. If DeSclafani can squeak through Matt Carpenter, and Brandon Moss he should have a nice outing tonight.
| Pitchers to Target for Salary Relief
Martin Perez – DraftKings: $4,300, FanDuel: $6,400 – Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers and the Colorado Rockies both head from Coors over to Globe Life Park, and Martin Perez could not be happier. Perez has been rocked on the road, but at home he has been fun to watch. While in Texas, Perez owns a 2.54 ERA, a batting average against of .251, and a ground ball rate of 53.6%. It is always hard to target a pitcher against the Colorado Rockies because their stats look better than most teams, but that is slightly due to their ballpark advantage, and the thing that is most significant to me is their hefty strikeout rate of 23.4% against southpaws. Perez is necessarily a big strikeout guy, but the Rockies will offer him ample strikeout opportunities, and he should have no trouble paying off his generous price on both sites.
Bartolo Colon – DraftKings: $5,900, FanDuel: $7,100 – New York Mets
Who doesn’t love Bartolo Colon? Colon is truly a gift to all of us, and he just looks like he is having way more fun than everybody else whenever he takes the mound. Despite all of that, Colon actually makes for a nice way to save some money on tonight’s slate. I love his matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks in pitcher friendly Citi Field, and he looks to be firmly in line for another quality start today. The Diamondbacks absolutely club lefties, but against righties it is a different story. Against right- handed pitchers this season the Diamondbacks rank 23 rd in weighted runs created plus, and 19 th in wOBA, along with the fifth highest strikeout rate. Colon is certainly no strikeout phenom, but the Diamondbacks will help him out a bit in the strikeout department tonight, and he should be able to pay off his lower tier price tag tonight.
That’s all I have for today, thanks for reading! If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @ColemanBahr, good luck tonight!
